5 Tips for Keeping Your Tires in Good Shape

Think about it – driving is one of the most dangerous things we do in our lives. We all rely on four tires to keep us traveling on the ride safely, so keeping our tires in great shape is essential.

Here are some tips to help you do that:

Tip #1: Check your tire pressure regularly.

The proper inflation of your tires is crucial to your safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, “the leading cause of tire-related crashes is under-inflated tires.” Tires can lose approximately one pound per square inch of air (PSI) per month, and sometimes even more in cold weather climates. Therefore, it’s important that you’re checking your own tire pressure monthly and not just relying on your mechanic to check when you get your oil changed.

Keep a gauge in your glovebox, and visit your neighborhood gas station to get free air if your pressure is too low.

Tip #2: Inspect your tires often.

Doing a physical inspection on your tires regularly is very important, especially before heading off on a long road trip. Things you should be looking for include cracks, bulges, and any objects that could have punctured your tires, such as nails, screws, glass, or rocks. In the case of anything puncturing your tires, you will need to get them replaced.

Tip #3: Don’t skip a tire rotation.

To maintain even tread wear and get the maximum life out of your tires, it’s best that you rotate your tires every 6,000 to 8,000 miles. You can even get a tire rotation done at the same time as a regular oil change, and they are fairly inexpensive to perform.

Tip #4: Replace your tires before it’s too late.

We all know tires are pretty expensive; however, driving on your tires past their lifespan puts you and your family in danger. Most tires have a wear bar between the treads of the tire. If the tire tread depth is at or below this bar, it’s time for new tires.

Tip #5: Don’t overload your vehicle.

Overloading a vehicle is not good for it and can cause tire failure. There is a place card located on your doorframe with information about how much weight your vehicle can safely handle.
