Tire Repair – How to Fix Them

If you’ve owned a car for any significant amount of time, you’ve probably run into a tire repair issue or two. At Performance Truck & Automotive Repair, we’ve encountered our fair share of tire repair issues, so we understand your frustration. Fortunately, not all tire repair results in the purchase of new tires — many issues can be fixed quickly and affordably. Knowing how to spot an issue and which tire repair solution is best for your unique situation can save you lots of time and money. Because we’re dedicated to our customers, we’ll share details about how you can save big on tire repair.

Locate the Puncture – finding the location of the puncture is the first thing you’ll need to do when assessing tire damage. If you’re lucky, the object that punctured your tire may still be visible. This is helpful, because it’s usually a good indication of the location and size of the hole. Don’t see an object? Carefully inspect the exterior of your tire until you find the damage. One source suggests marking the repair site with tape or a sharpie.  Once you’ve clearly labeled the hole, it’s safe to remove the object.

Sidewall – just as the name suggests, the “sidewall” is on the side of your tire. As a rule of thumb, never try to repair a sidewall. Attempting to do so could cause a tire blowout on the road.

Plug – if it’s possible, plugging a tire is an affordable and quick tire repair solution. For just around ten dollars, you can usually get a significant amount of miles from a punctured tire. “Newer plugs ‘vulcanize’ to the tire for improved stability on the road. As a result, a driver can get a quick tire plug and drive another 20k miles on the tire with no problems,” reported a tire repair article. There are some stipulations about what kind of tire repairs can be fixed with plugs, though.

Plugs work well for small, straight punctures. However, diagonal holes and punctures near a tire’s sidewall are better suited for patches. If your situation permits, plugs are an excellent tire repair solution. For the best results, remember to carefully follow the plug kit’s instructions and make sure the tire is plugged well.

Patches – as mentioned, patches are great repair solutions for holes that are within the vicinity of your car’s sidewall. They’re also good tools for repairing angled punctures. Done right, patches are a safe tire repair solution that are far more affordable than tire replacement. It’s essential that you pay attention to the parameters for using patches and their restrictions. Have a larger hole? “A puncture of greater than 1/4″ in diameter will require a more complicated solution than a plug and patch,” reported an automotive authority.

Now that you’ve made the distinction between which tire repairs are safe to fix and what solutions work best for different situations, you’re sure to save money on future tire repairs. For instances that require the help of an expert, you can count on Performance Truck  & Automotive Repair to get the job done. Give us a call at (334) 245-6600 — we look forward to serving you!

  1. Tires can be such a pain when they have leaks. Esp when you can’t see where the leak is, but these are valid solutions to fixing holes. Thanks
