1. Difficulty Steering

If you have difficult steering, your wheel is stiff or your car makes a noise when you try to turn, your shocks and struts may be to blame. An auto repair technician can determine the cause for sure.

2. Strange Vehicle Maneuvering

Your vehicle should move in the direction you steer it. If your vehicle nose dives when stopping, sways when turning or bounces while driving, you’ll want to see an auto repair technician to figure out the problem.

3. Worn or Damaged Parts or Pieces

Visibly worn or damaged shocks and struts are one clear sign that it’s time to visit the auto repair technician. Broken, worn and damaged bushings and mounts can be another clear sign as well.

4. Leaking Fluids

Your shocks and struts shouldn’t leak fluids. If they do, take your car in to an auto repair technician right away.

5. Uneven Tire Wear

Cupped, uneven tire wear can signal a problem with your struts or shocks. Visit a trained auto repair technician to determine the cause for sure. Auto repair technicians know just what to look for, and can have your car fixed up in no time.

6. Age of the Parts

Struts and shocks typically last around 50,000 miles. If your car has more miles on it than that, a trip to an experienced auto repair technician might be in order.

While all six of these signs can indicate that your shocks or struts need replaced, many of the can indicate other problems as well. Whether you think your shocks and struts may be to blame or you are positive they are, take your car in to an auto repair technician right away. Then, you’ll be back out on the road in a safe car in no time.

  1. There is certainly a lot of things to check up on, but it’s worth it to know when you need repairs. The worst thing ever is being stranded out in the middle of nowhere with a broken car. One of the easiest ways to tell if you need repairs is checking for leaking fluids, like you said. Thanks for the helpful tips!

  2. Thank you for mentioning that if a car is steering very strangely, it most likely means that you need to get new shocks. When I was in high school, my family owned a truck that I would drive. I often would have to adjust the wheel so that the car wouldn’t swerve off the road or into another lane. I never knew this was because of the shocks- I thought it was just the alignment.
