Prep Your Vehicle for Winter Weather

Winter may have been mild so far, but the worst may be yet to come. But that doesn’t mean that the health of your vehicle needs to suffer. Performance Auto has some auto repair advice to help you cruise through the rest of the winter into spring.

How to Keep Winter From Damaging Your Car

Auto Repair

Learn how to defrost your vehicle properly. Nearly every winter, we have to perform auto repair for drivers who tried to get into an iced-over vehicle with improper technique or equipment. If your lock is frozen, try coating it in commercially prepared deicer. And avoid trying to use boiling water to get rid of ice from your windshield — this can crack the glass. Instead, use 3 parts vinegar and one part water in a spray bottle the night before a freeze to keep your windshield free from ice.

Check your oil regularly. Dirty oil can be especially tough for on your car in the winter. Don’t skip oil changes and checks just because it is cold outside.

Bring your vehicle into an auto repair expert for a check up. The demands of winter weather put a massive strain on your vehicle. Let an auto repair professional take a look at your vehicle’s systems to ensure that you’re not waiting on the side of the road for auto repair this winter.

  1. I didn’t realize that there were so many different things that you should do to winterize your car. It sounds like they would benefit you quite a bit, especially when it comes to repair costs. I think you’re right about getting your car repaired before winter hits so you don’t have to worry about it breaking down.

  2. It seems like this would be a really good thing for me to be doing. Having a good visit to an auto repair services shop seems like the best preventative measure to me. The biggest thing that I need to replace right now are the brakes.

  3. Thanks for sharing this! I agree that it is important to know that your car can handle the winter. My truck has never been in the snow before, and I want to make sure that it’ll do well. I’ll be sure to make that solution of vinegar and water to make sure my car won’t get frosty.

  4. I agree, it’s important to prepare your car before winter hits. The area that I live in has a lot of snow storms through half of the year. Like you said, one of the most important things you can do to make sure that your car is ready to drive in the winter is to make sure to have your car looked at before it gets extremely cold. I found out that my transmission needed a little bit of work during the fall. It was a good thing that I had the problem fixed before a big storm hit us really hard, or else I don’t know if my car would have been able to run the next day because of how cold it was outside.
