Tools to Keep in Your Car

It’s handy to keep some tools in your trunk. It doesn’t have to be a nice toolbox, just find an old shoe box or milk crate to hold a few things. Phillips and flat head screwdrivers are nice for cosmetic adjustments like if a mirror comes loose. An adjustable wrench is nice to use a flat tire for those who aren’t very strong. Other handy things are rags, jumper cables, extra coolant, a gas container and duct tape. Make sure your jack and spare tire are in the trunk as well.

Common Problems You Can Fix

Overheating: A problem more during the summer. All you have to do is simply check all your fluids. Make sure the engine coolant, brake fluid and automatic transmission fluid are at the right levels. If it’s the oil that needs changing, you’ll need to call for a tow.

Flat tire: Changing a flat is fairly straight-forward. Put the jack under the sturdy part of the car, not near plastic, and lift the car up. Then remove the flat and put on the new tire, tighten the lug nuts as well as you can if you don’t have a wrench, then drive to a service station to check it. If you aren’t physically capable of changing a tire, call for help.

Don’t be a hero. If you don’t know what the problem is, don’t try to fix it. You’re family will understand if you need to call for help.
